    About Us

    About Us

Chittaranjan College was founded in the year 1967 at the initiative of a few dedicated men led by the Late Shri Ranadeb Chowdhury and Late Shri Shyam Lal Mistry who took it upon themselves to establish this institution of learning and named it Chittaranjan College after one of the most illustrious sons of India, Chittaranjan Das.

Initially the college was housed at Chittaranjan High School (Kasba). Thereafter in 1969, the institution was shifted to Surya Sen Street. The college moved to its present premises in 1974. An educational institution is, to its learners, like their affectionate mother—the Alma Mater .To the community around, such an institution is an invaluable social resource, an inspiration for development. To every literate person, an educational institution is like the shining star , the spectrum of which is not confined within a limited area but radiates in all possible directions. Advancement of education would therefore mean progress of civilization, 57 years (1961-2024) of an educational institution is probably an indicator of such progress.

A focal point in the city’s transport network, Chittaranjan College is situated on Mahatma Gandhi road, quite close to the world premier iconic seat of learning, Calcutta University, College Street Campus. It is situated in the heart of the city’s academic area and is quite close to some feeder schools and has travelled a long way to become a renowned institution of higher education today. Behind its success story lies the munificence of the founder members, the constructive role of the trustees and the successive Governing Bodies of the college, and above all the contribution, love and sacrifice of generations of students, teachers and non-teaching members of the institution and successive heads of the institution and our esteemed Principal.

Some innovative measures were taken to provide more opportunities to students in various fields. Expansion and renovation of the college premises were undertaken and a Reading Room was constructed near the library. The library was refurbished with more shelves to accommodate a large number of books. Current magazines and Journals. In order to keep up with trends in Information Technology, a fully air conditioned Computer Room was constructed for use by students.

The college was established to cater to the needs of the residents of Central Calcutta as an institute for higher secondary level study (at first) and then diversified into an institute of UG education. The variegated geographical, cultural and economic backgrounds of the students creates an ambience which is unique to the college. Despite its cultural intermingling, the college continues to be predominantly urban. Here modernity is tempered with traditional values. There is a strong community feeling among students informed by ethical natures mustered by both students and teachers. This creates a sense of security cherished by the college community.

An aspect of the tradition which has developed during the last fifty seven years is the close relationship between students, teachers, non-teaching staff, and the Governing Body, guardians\parents, alumni, social activists , leaders and eminent persons.
We consider ourselves to be members of the same academic family and this feeling of oneness fosters a positive sense of community among all. The Staff Recreation Club of the college is one such meeting ground with its yearly picnics, birthday celebrations etc. We have taken growth and innovation along our stride to address industry demands. Moreover, we have embraced academics from a variety of disciplines, enabling us to frame a dynamic curriculum for the students.

The basic objective of Chittaranjan College is to disseminate higher education. It also aims at empowering the underprivileged section of society by imparting quality education to economically backward people, particularly women. We aim at empowering the poor and backward classes. Many students at Chittaranjan College belong to this category and travel by trains to college to avail of the opportunities offered by the college. This is our greatest advantage and USP.

The college is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and offers B.A. Honours programme in two (02) subjects and B.A. general programme in 05 subjects.
