The Department of Philosophy of Chittaranjan College was started at the under graduate level in the year 2002 with Professor Chhanda Ghosh joining this department as a fulltime faculty. In 2010, Ms. Rhea Lahiri joined the department as part time faculty and has now been approved as State Aided College Teacher, Category – 1 by the Department of Higher Education of West Bengal and is presently running the department as HOD.

The department of Philosophy in its eternal quest for knowledge and understanding has always given emphasis on construction of analytical minds among the students. Philosophy as a discipline reflects upon and integrates various aspects of different subject areas like psychology, social science, political science and so on. Starting with the part system (2 + 1), the department has gradually been evolved through 1 + 1 + 1 system, CBCS system and presently the new CCF system.
The department’s goal is not only to share the knowledge on the theories of Indian and Western Philosophies but also to help students apply the understanding of the theories in their holistic development. Through our classroom lectures and various project works we aim to patronize a culture of improved problem solving attitude by a multidimensional analytical approach that would help the students in various walks of life. Most importantly the discipline inculcates values and nurtures them towards being an ethical and responsible citizen of the future.

Students of this department participate in debate sessions and after completion of Bachelor Degree, many of them have got jobs in different sectors like BPOs, NGOs, Bank.
